Urban Canopy

Project 2: ‘Urban Canopy and a new public space at the harbour waterfront, with a performance space for music/live concerts’ 400sqm

Site: Edge on harbour front, Newcastle Wickham

Client: City of Newcastle (NCC) and Hunter Development Corporation (HDC).

Assignment 4 ‘urban canopy and music space’ is the start of project 2, and asks you to develop a concept design for an urban public space in an area that is currently without context: The waterfront of the Honeysuckle development in Newcastle, close to Wickham Station. There are important view connections to be considered, e.g. to Nobby’s.

Assignment 5 is the continuation of this design to a schematic design proposition. The final main assignment is the developed design of the urban canopy and music space, including the space around it to high resolution, with a technical study of a part of the structure (Assignments 6). For project 2, a high technical resolution is expected, also for the light-weight large-span structural systems, using timber, or steel, or bamboo, etc.
